Motorola Droid X Looks Set For Launch, Will It Compete With Apple iPhone 4?

While Apple braces for its biggest device launch ever, rivals Motorola, Verizon Wireless and Google are set to unveil a brand new smartphone, which reportedly carries incredible features and apps.

If reports are to believed, Motorola Droid X, also referred to previously as Motorola Droid Shadow, is expected to be unveiled on June 23…almost 24 hours before Apple’s much-awaited iPhone 4 hits the stores. The timing of the launch of Droid X clearly indicates that rivals are all set to dampen the Apple’s fourth generation iPhone release.

However, Apple’s stint with iPhone 4 has been already tainted by negative stories and all sorts of rumors. At Apple’s WWDC we saw how iPhone 4 failed to connect to Internet due to heavy WiFi congestion. Many experts have also dismissed Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ claims that iPhone4 would have Retina Display. Experts have also raised questions over the success of iPhone4 in the light of AT&T juggle system crashes and unpopular schemes. Massive pre orders touching 600,000 marks have already delayed the iPhone4 launch.

On the other hand, Android camp is bracing up for a glitzy launch of Droid X. The smartphone is all over the Verizon’s website. The ad placed on the Verizon’s website indicates that Droid X would be loaded with some fantabulous features including 4.3-inch display device, HDMI output and Android 2.1 OS. It will also have FWVGA 854 x 480-resolution screen, giving a crystal clear image. The Droid X features apparently stand toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPhone 4.0.

Many experts believe that the trend of larger display is likely to attract more customers. The trend is simply toward “greater diversity in smartphone form factors, some with big screens, some with keyboards, some at the low end to lure in those with messaging phones,” Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin was quoted by a website as saying. Gartner Research’s Ken Dulaney agreed: “I suspect the vendors will move along these two vectors going forward with minimum screen size at the low end at 3.5 inches. Anything outside these boundaries won’t do well.”

Altimeter Group’s Michael Gartenberg believes that 4.3-inch display is just perfect for typing. But he cautions that larger display will consume more power and won’t fit in pocket easily. “There’s always going to be tradeoffs but as you get to a high-end screen size, you’re pushing the form factor of what fits in the pocket. You get to a 5-inch screen and it’s already too large,” Gartenberg told the website. “I don’t think we’re going to see a whole lot of devices that move in the space because you’re pushing the boundaries of what’s practical for a phone, getting into near tablet dimensions.”
