
Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel yesterday officially announced his candidacy for the post of Chicago mayor. Emanuel promised that he would fight any tax increase for city residents, if elected to office. "We cannot ask taxpayers for more when families are struggling to stay afloat in this economy. We cannot price Chicagoans out of their homes, their schools and their communities," he told supporters. However, she had to lose her seat though as the control of the House of Representatives. California Proposition Results : Though the results are to be announced officially, it seems that the voters have voted against the California’s Proposition 19 on the legalization of marijuana. According to Edison Research poll results conducted for the National Voter Pool , San Francisco was the only exception where voters supported the Proposition 19. The poll found that the support for the Prop 19 was a generational issue as majority of thirty plus voters were absolutely against it while the voters under thirty voted in its favor. The Senate today interrupted its summer recess to approve a $600-million border security bill. The bill will allow President Barack Obama to send 1,500 more troops and immigration officials to beef up security along the border with Mexico. It is expected that Obama will sign the legislation as soon as possible. President Barack Obama and Democrats must be feeling happy today, savoring one of their sweetest victories of the midterm election season, as Senator Michael Bennet won the Colorado Democratic primary yesterday, ending the notion that the voters are discontent with all incumbents. Had Bennet failed to defeat Andrew Romanoff, former Colorado House speaker who refused to follow White House diktat to stay out of the race, Obama would surely have faced criticism for supporting a struggling candidate.
Mexico has demanded in a federal court in Arizona to declare the state’s new immigration law unconstitutional. Arguing their case Mexico said that the new law endangers the interests of the state as well as is citizens. A legal brief supporting one of the five lawsuits challenging the law, was submitted on Tuesday by lawyers of Mexico.
In a move that is going to benefit millions of jobless Americans, the Senate has passed unemployment extension bill, after months of debate. As per the legislation, the out of work Americans would receive unemployment privileges through November. The bill brought by the US government was blocked by the opposition, which questioned its affect on the national debt. The bill, after receiving go ahead from the government, was blocked by the Senate where Republicans strongly opposed the bill. Former vice-presidential candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin has also joined the ongoing debate over a proposed Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. Palin posted several messages on social networking site Twitter saying that the project should not be built. Manhattan residents are already protesting the proposal to build mosque near the site, which was attacked on 9/11. In what is being considered as a major embarrassment stemming in for Joe Biden, the Vice President has been slapped with over USD 219,000 fine by the Election watchdogs over his allegedly poor bookkeeping and taking excessive contributions during his 2008 presidential campaign. The audit was released by the Federal Election Commission on Friday. The audit showed that Biden’s aides had accepted an illegal corporate contribution in the form a free round-trip New Hamsphire and Iowa in June 2007. In addition, the Biden campaign shelled out USD 7,911 for the first-class airfare to GEH Air Transportation, but watchdogs pointed that the genuine airfare was about USD 34,800. Sarah Palin, former Alaska Governor is back into political limelight thanks to Face book, Youtube and Twitter. Ms Palin’s fund raising abilities along with her continued groundwork on behalf of the candidates has left the republican leaders and political strategist in jitters whether she is thinking for 2012 U. S. presidential bid. However, her intentions remain unclear as she declined to comment through her political action committee. West Virginia’s governor, Joe Manchin III, has selected Carte P. Goodwin, his former general counsel, as a temporary successor for Robert C. Byrd, whose Senate seat was recently vacated after his death. The 36-year-old Goodwin will hold the position until a special election is held. The election is scheduled to be held later this year. Mr. Manchin had said that he would contest for the post once again. Speaking at a ceremony held to mark his appointment, Mr Goodwin said that it would be an honor to replace Byrd, a Democrat who passed away after serving over 50 years in the Senate. Australian prime minister Julia Gillard yesterday called a general election for August 21. The call for the snap poll surprised everyone because Gillard has assume the top post just three weeks before. Gillard, the Labor party leader, is the first female premier of Australia. The 48-year-old Gillard added that she would now seek the support of the Australian citizens in order to remain the leader of the Labor Party. Gillard deposed former prime minister Kevin Rudd in a party coup to become the leader.
