Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced some impressive numbers during the World wide Developers Conference as the company also announced an update to its iBook e-book marketplace and reader on Monday.

Jobs also shared that users have downloaded more than 5 million book copies in the first 65 days of iBook’s availability. This is over and above the input shared by majority of the publishers where they have said that the app’s share of their electronic sale is about 22%.

New features in the iBook were also shared by the CEO. One of the features is the ability to highlight text, add bookmarks and create notes. The table of contents also has the list of all bookmarks and notes created by the user. The updated iBook will also be supporting PDF documents thereby extending the app’s ability to display books to a large number of new titles. However, there was no mention of whether PDF could be accessed through a separate ‘bookshelf’ in the app’s main screen.

App Store sells iBooks for free and all that it requires is an iPad which runs iPhone OS 3.2 or higher. The next major iPhone OS release will also see the iBook getting bundled with the iPhone. All the same controls would be there in the iPhone version of the app including highlighting, bookmarking and notes features. It will also have PDF support which will allow users to save PDF from mal to their iBook shelf. Users will access to the iBookstore for buying e-books for the app.
