California Proposition Results : Though the results are to be announced officially, it seems that the voters have voted against the California’s Proposition 19 on the legalization of marijuana. According to Edison Research poll results conducted for the National Voter Pool , San Francisco was the only exception where voters supported the Proposition 19. The poll found that the support for the Prop 19 was a generational issue as majority of thirty plus voters were absolutely against it while the voters under thirty voted in its favor.

Despite the defeat, the supporters of Proposition 19 are happy that they have succeeded in bringing attention to the cause like never before and are considering it as their victory. “This is the first time major elected officials and labor unions and civil rights organizations have endorsed a marijuana legalization measure. The debate is less about whether to legalize marijuana and increasingly about how to legalize marijuana,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance.

Around $3.4 million was put up by the supporters of Proposition 19 referendum to legalize recreational marijuana in California. More than 50 percent of the money was given by Richard Lee, better known in California as the Marijuana Millionaire. Lee is a well known entrepreneur and is an Oakland native. He is the man behind a medical marijuana dispensary, nursery and a strong proponent of marijuana legalization since the 1970s.

If the voters had supported the Proposition 19, it would have permitted Californians over the age of 21 to propagate up to 25 square feet of cannabis plants. It would have also allowed them to keep up to an ounce of marijuana with themselves.
