Some users of the battery-powered Arm & Hammer Spinbrush have complained that parts of the electric-toothbrush popped up and caused injuries.

Reports of injuries made to the Food and Drug Administration from using the Spinbrush-powered toothbrush that have replaceable heads comprise chipped or broken teeth; cuts to the mouth and gums; swallowing and choking on broken pieces; and wounding the face and eyes. Also reported were cases of Spinbrush for Kids models with non-replaceable heads causing cuts to lips; burns from the batteries; and bristles falling off and getting lodged in a child's tonsils.

In 2011, an FDA inspection of Church & Dwight Co.- the manufacturer of the Spinbrush, found out that there had been a number of consumer complaints which hadn't been reported to the agency.

Following an FDA warning and discussions, the company took some measures, including improving the labeling of the product; adding bristles which switch color with wear to tell users to replace the brush head; and issuing a safety notice about Spinbrush in advertisements on print and television, as well as its website and interactive toll-free phone numbers- 800-352-3384 or 800-561-0752.

It's advised that before using the Spinbrush, users inspect it for any damage or loose brush bristles, ensure that the head is connected tightly, and then report any problems to Church & Dwight.

Also, while brushing, users must not bite down on the brush head, and children are required to be supervised, so should be adults who may need assistance when using this electrical toothbrush. Also, it's recommended to follow instructions and the advised replacement guidelines.

Any injuries or problems with the product can be problem at www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch, either by regular mail, using postage-paid, pre-addressed FDA form 35007; or by fax at 800-FDA-0178; or by phone at 800-332-1088.
